WEBINAR: The Potential for Payments for Ecosystem Services in Alberta’s Agricultural Sector
DECEMBER 12 | 11:00 AM (MST)
As land stewards, Alberta’s producers can take actions that enhance the value of ecosystem services. The South Saskatchewan Regional Plan identifies payments for ecosystem services as one potential strategy for maintaining ecological health in the South Saskatchewan Region. At the same time, producers are interested in understanding diversified sources of revenue that could support the provision of ecosystem services. Credible science is required to demonstrate that consumers and governments are receiving value for money in payment for ecosystem service programs. This webinar will provide an overview of a multi-disciplinary research project in Indianfarm Creek, Alberta funded by the Alberta Livestock and Meat Association (now Alberta Agriculture and Forestry) and Alberta Innovates, to understand the costs and benefits of Beneficial Management Practices (BMPs) for water storage, water quality, carbon and wildlife habitat for the Livestock sector, and future research required to translate ecosystem service benefits into ecosystem service market opportunities.
